Barnet is one of London's largest boroughs by area, stretching from Finchley and Golders Green in the south to High Barnet and Chipping Barnet in the north. Rents vary considerably across the borough, but overall sit close to the London average, with the southern areas nearer the Northern line commanding more than the outer edges. Housing is mixed, with Edwardian and interwar semi-detached and terraced houses forming much of the stock, alongside purpose built mansion blocks in Golders Green and Hendon and newer flats near Colindale and Brent Cross. The Northern line runs through much of the borough, with stations including Finchley Central, Woodside Park, High Barnet and Mill Hill East, and the Thameslink line also serves Mill Hill Broadway and New Barnet.

The London Borough of Barnet has no selective licensing scheme currently. A shared home let to five or more people from more than one household still needs a mandatory HMO licence. A landlord buying in Barnet should weigh the sale price against the achievable rent before the yield is meaningful.
